There is no doubt that the study conducted by Dr Philip Zimbardo in 1971 at Stanford University was extremely valuable to not only the Psychology profession, but also to all social science fields. He tested and selected participates to recreate a prison environment separating one group into two, guards and prisoners, and the results were truly ground breaking. A lot of significant information was gathered and the results help us understand psychological processes and the changes in individuals submitted to an authoritarian system. College students were placed in a situation that caused a radical alteration to their behavioural patterns. For some of them it only took two days to reach a state of emotional breakdown and for other the effects had long term consequences. It was probably an exciting scenario for the psychologists involved in the study. There were a lot of dramatic changes in attitudes and some surprising reactions from the subjects selected as they were watched, recorded and analysed. According to the leaders of the project no homosexual or racist practice would be tolerated and no physical punishment would be allowed to take place for ethical reasons. It was certainly ethical to forbid such actions. But how ethical were they? As said before, they were watching closely day in and day out but still they allowed severe psychological punishment to take place. Cruel actions were carried out by the ones that had the role of guards towards the ones acting as prisoners. And the fact that the organizers would give the â€Å"guards† a certain freedom to decide how to handle the â€Å"prisoners† suggested that they would be tolerant of their actions, however they decided to handle the persons under their â€Å"guard†. Some participants were depressed and disturbed for being there and others would stay much longer than they were supposed to. It shows us the extreme impact that this unbalanced system had on both groups. The absolute lack of or the total ownership of power transformed the subject’s behaviours to the point that made them demonstrate loss of human qualities. The participants with the role of prisoners became completely obedient to the ones acting as guards. They had no freedom of choice and they were constantly humiliated. The guards became cold and mean. Both groups had no other type of human interaction and by having reflective sunglasses as part of the guards’ uniforms not even eye contact was possible, dividing the two groups even further. Even though the experiment didn’t recreate with absolute accuracy what exactly happens in a real prison, Dr Zimbardo had to cease it. He couldn’t do as he had originally planned and had to finish the study after only six days. It might seem like a short period of time, but it was long enough to have a strong effect on the participants’ stability. If the Stanford Prison Experiment was so harmful to the participants what would be the consequences of a real detention environment? Can the rehabilitation system nowadays be trusted to sufficiently recover individuals who after their sentence will go back into normal society? The dehumanization and deindividuation demonstrated in this experiment, and which still takes place in prisons today, does not contribute on the recovery of those individuals. On a BBC News article â€Å"The world’s biggest prison system† a former Pennsylvania prison guard expresses his thoughts: â€Å"The Christian in me says its wrong, but the correction officer in me says I love to make a grown man to piss himself† The focus on punishment still is strongly incorporated in the system making prison life a very harmful and damaging experience for those who end up behind bars. Giving the opportunity of a productive prison life could maybe change some people’s life and get people out of there with positive results. Even if youre vegetarian, you cant avoid consuming insects if you eat anything that has been processed, packaged, canned, or prepared. You are, without a doubt, getting a bit of bug protein in your diet. In some cases, the bug bits are intentional ingredients, and in some cases, theyre just by-products of the way we harvest and package our food. Red Food Coloring When the FDA changed food-labeling requirements in 2009, many consumers were startled to learn that manufacturers put crushed bugs in their food products for color. Outrageous! Cochineal extract, which comes from a scale insect, has been used as a red dye or coloring for centuries. Cochineal bugs (Dactylopius coccus) are true bugs belonging to the order Hemiptera. To defend themselves, cochineal bugs produce carminic acid, a foul-tasting, bright red substance that makes predators think twice about eating them. Lac bugs are big business in India and Thailand, where they are cultivated for their waxy coatings. Workers scrape the Lac bugs glandular secretions from the host plants, and in the process, some of the Lac bugs get scraped off, too. The waxy bits are typically exported in flake form, called sticklac or gum lac, or sometimes just shellac flakes. Gum lac is used in all kinds of products: waxes, adhesives, paints, cosmetics, varnishes, fertilizers, and more. Furthermore, the brain's thalamus is identified as the possible sensory connector because it fires 40 impulses per second that sweep through the entire brain (Blakeslee, 1995a). These findings are a serious implication to Dualism because it states the mind is not physical. If the mind is not physical, it cannot affect the physical body, so the Dualist theory of two-sided interactions between the body and mind are false. The aforementioned argument is supported by many other scientific facts and objections against Dualism. For example, phantom pain is a well-known phenomenon in medicine. When people lose a limb, they will often feel painful spasms in parts that no longer exist. Although neuroscience is still developing, scientists assume sensory conflict is responsible for this phenomenon (Blakeslee, 1995b). The brain remembers the nerves going to the missing limb and their previous function, so it can issue orders through those nerves. However, the nerves will not get feedback from the muscles in the non-existent limb, so the brain stops the movement forcibly (Blakeslee, 1995b). (WWW. brainboxx . co. k) We all learn in different styles it’s just a case of finding out what style suits the individual learner to get the best results out of them, for example if you were to teach a learner that is best suited to Kinaesthetic learning, by giving them just handouts and talking, they will lose concentration much quicker and wont absorb any of the information you are giving them, whereas if you keep them engaged by maybe doing something as simple as giving out the handouts or give a little demonstration of what their learning they will keep engaged therefore absorbing the information for longer. There are three types of learning styles, Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic. Someone that requires a Visual learning style would prefer to learn using drawing, sketches, handouts, charts etc. An Auditory learner would prefer to learn with the aid of listening and then answering questions about what they have just heard, stories (maybe of past experiences), anecdotes, puns etc. Whereas someone that learns in a Kinaesthetic way would learn in a much more hands on way by building things, taking something apart and re-building to see how it works, using their hands, being able to move around etc. When setting up your lesson plan you will have to cater for all three learning types and maybe you could already have an idea on how to get the best out of your group of learners that use all three types, for example: if you have a few Kinaesthetic learners in a group or discussion session you could keep them engaged by asking them to come up and give a demonstration, or if you’re in a workshop environment you could give a demonstration for all, whilst verbally explaining what you’re doing and achieving, therefore also catering for Visual and Auditory learners. The main thing is to keep the learners engaged. (As Geoff petty says in Teaching Today) it is better to have 80 per cent concentration on a moderately effective method than 10per cent on a supposedly brilliant one.

Such dilemmas often centred around developing her personal autonomy in the context of her ethnic origin within the culture of dependency and interdependency that collective cultures proclaim. I often found myself reflecting on how any abrupt changes could damage her rather than benefit her as nonconformity to gender roles and stereotypes can have a devastating effect on females who may be stigmatized, ostracized or even â€Å"socially erased† in particular cultural contexts (Romero, 1985).
